Rewiring Recovery: Chris Hill’s Revolutionary Approach to Addiction and Mental Health Support

Chris Hill, a leading Addiction and Mental Health Specialist, is gaining recognition as a “Lived Experience Practitioner,” drawing from his own experiences with addiction and mental health challenges to support others on their recovery journey. His commitment is deeply rooted in personal tragedy, a profound understanding of the human psyche, and a relentless drive to raise awareness about the global addiction crisis.

A Tragic Loss That Sparked a Movement

Chris’s struggle with addiction began early—cigarettes at seven, alcohol at 11, and later, ecstasy and cocaine. Immersed in the 1990s clubbing scene, Chris’s world shattered when his twin brother Rob died after taking ecstasy during a reunion with friends. This devastating loss inspired Chris to establish the Rob Hill Foundation, which offers free support for individuals battling addiction and mental health issues, regardless of financial background.

A Unique Approach Born from Experience

Traditional recovery methods like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Cocaine Anonymous (CA) did not work for Chris. After trying therapy, hypnotherapy, and other conventional treatments without success, he developed his own unique method inspired by the film The Matrix. The movie’s theme of disconnect between the conscious and subconscious mind resonated deeply, forming the foundation for what would become Conscious Disconnect Therapy (CDT).
“Addiction isn’t rational or logical,” Chris explains. “It’s a response driven by primitive brain functions, where pleasure-seeking overrides reason. Recovery requires rewiring the brain and taking control back from the subconscious.”

Tackling a National Epidemic

Chris believes the UK is in the midst of a growing addiction crisis, exacerbated by cultural normalization and media influence. The problem spans beyond illicit substances to include legal drugs like antidepressants, antipsychotics, and painkillers—impacting 1 in 4 individuals. Alcohol remains the most harmful and widely abused substance. Additionally, sugar and fast-food addictions are contributing to a rise in obesity and diabetes.

Advocacy for Reform, Not Legalisation

While Chris supports the decriminalisation of drug possession to reduce addiction-fueled incarceration, he strongly opposes full legalisation, warning it sends the wrong message. He instead advocates for education-based prevention and accessible treatment alternatives that address root causes.

Specialising in “Functioning Addicts”

Chris’s clients are often “functioning addicts”—people who maintain jobs and relationships but face growing struggles with addiction. Many are referred by therapists, addiction services, or the NHS, recognising Chris’s success in achieving tangible results. His program includes 24/7 support and demands full commitment from clients ready to transform their lives.

Rehabilitation Over Incarceration

Chris also provides pre-sentencing reports for individuals facing prison time due to addiction-related offences. He promotes treatment-based sentencing alternatives that focus on rehabilitation rather than punishment.
“Anyone with an addiction who goes to prison will come out with a worse addiction,” he states. “We need to prioritise recovery over punishment.”

Fighting Homelessness and Its Links to Addiction

Chris co-founded WSUP Woolwich, a registered charity dedicated to addressing homelessness in South London. Acknowledging the strong connection between homelessness, addiction, and mental illness, WSUP offers holistic support to those most vulnerable.

The Beat My Addictions Programme

Chris’s flagship programme, Beat My Addictions, is available online at BeatMyAddictions.com. It teaches people how addiction rewires the brain and body, offering a 10-day change process that empowers individuals to reclaim their lives and embrace long-term personal development.

Raising Awareness and Educating Society

Chris is passionate about educating the public on the far-reaching consequences of addiction. “Addiction is not just a personal issue,” he says. “It’s a social crisis that impacts families, workplaces, and communities. We need to treat it as a collective responsibility.”
