Players earn Favor Tokens by playing, which are then used to unlock cosmetics and other items. On paper, this allows players to focus on what they want most. However, every reward can also be bought directly with Platinum, Diablo 4’s premium currency, and the UI strongly encourages spending real money.
Reddit user Loika highlighted a key issue in a detailed post: the purchase button for Platinum is far more prominent than the option to spend Favor Tokens. For example, a cosmetic armor set might cost 15 tokens or 750 Platinum (about $7.50). There is no confirmation step for the Platinum purchase, increasing the risk of accidental spending. Players quickly realized that the default Platinum button placement encourages impulsive purchases rather than rewarding play.
Console users face additional difficulties. One player pointed out that when claiming rewards with a controller, the button mapping changes mid-process, switching the primary button from claiming with tokens to buying with Platinum. This confusing behavior, confirmed by GameSpot, means that players could unintentionally spend money without realizing it.
The pricing model adds further frustration. Each premium Reliquary is priced at 500 Platinum, or players can buy all three for 1,500 Platinum. However, there is a “Battle Pass Bundle” that offers all three for 1,000 Platinum, saving players a significant amount. But if a player buys even one Reliquary separately, they lose access to this discounted bundle and must pay full price for the remaining ones. This punishes uninformed players and complicates purchasing decisions unnecessarily.
The Deluxe Bundle is another sore point. At 2,800 Platinum-nearly $28-it includes the same armor set as the standard bundle plus a pet and wings. Many players feel that the extras don’t justify the price hike, leading to questions about value and fairness.
